Course Overview

The Design Concept course offers an in-depth exploration of the creative journey involved in generating and visualizing ideas across diverse media platforms, with a particular emphasis on visual storytelling mediums like film, animation, and multimedia productions. Structured into thematic units, students will immerse themselves in mastering the foundational principles and practical techniques necessary for crafting compelling concept art and developing storyboards effectively.
This course centres on guiding students through the process of concept art creation and storyboard development via meticulously designed units. Through active participation in exercises and receiving feedback from both instructors and peers, students will gain proficiency in fundamental principles and practical methodologies. The overarching goal is to foster a deep understanding of the iterative design process, which is indispensable for thriving in the ever-evolving landscape of concept art and storytelling across various media platforms.

CU01: Concept Art Planning

In this initial phase, students will learn to identify and understand the requirements of concept design projects. They will analyze the language of film and other relevant design aspects to inform their creative decisions. Through idea generation activities, students will develop a range of concepts, recording all pertinent instructions and tasks for future reference.

CU02: Concept Art Research

Building upon the groundwork laid in the planning phase, students will delve into comprehensive design research. They will gather and archive multiple references, refining these concepts to ensure practicality and feasibility. The culmination of this unit involves the creation and presentation of a research board showcasing the depth and breadth of their design exploration.

CU03: Idea Development

In this unit, students will refine their ideas into tangible concepts through thumbnail sketches and drawing board creations. They will identify the core elements of their concept designs and present them to superiors for feedback and approval.

CU04: Concept Art Illustration

Students will learn to breathe life into their concepts by determining appropriate colour schemes, backgrounds, moods, and atmospheres. Through illustration techniques, they will produce polished concept art boards that effectively convey their intended narratives.

CU05: Storyboard Development

In the final unit, students will focus on the narrative structure and visual sequencing essential for effective storytelling. They will analyze storyboard requirements, produce cohesive storyboards, and present their development process to demonstrate proficiency in translating conceptual ideas into compelling visual narratives.
